Using Raised Garden Beds for a Fall Crop

Most people think of raised garden beds as something that is used from early spring through the end of the growing season. However, I recently spoke to a young lady who was using her garden beds, along with a small portable greenhouse to grow her own produce throughout the fall and into winter. What she was doing was very simple, cost affective and can be done in most areas without a great deal of problems.

Once her main summer crop was over, she planted her fall crop in the tiered raised bed she uses and then placed her portable greenhouse over the bed as soon as the weather indicates that it needs to be covered. She uses a pot to keep the greenhouse warm on cold nights by heating it inside the house and then placing it in the greenhouse and closing it up for the night. Though this takes a commitment, it was a very good idea for those of us that have small yards but still would like to have a garden for some of our own foods throughout the year.
