Re-Establishing a Relationship with Your Food Source
Being raised with the knowledge of grandparents, aunts and uncles that were farmers and ranchers was a blessing in disguise. At the time, I didn’t realize that I was getting an important foundation to pass along to my kids and grand-kids. I remember watching a young boy sheep on my great grandfather’s place being sheered for wool; my Aunt Ruby out in the chicken pen hooking the neck of the chicken and in one fell swoop – dinner; and the hours we spent out with my grandmother picking vegetables out of the garden. It was something that I always carried with me and assumed that everybody knew were their food came from but I was wrong.
Just recently I have found that many children actually believe food comes from the grocery stores! They have lost the connection from the source that provides and that cannot be good. Many books are being published talking about our food production and how we have lost the grace and wonder of how food is produced and delivered. It’s about time we re thought what we are teaching and what we are eating and get back to basics.
